What mold cleaner / mold killer are there?
The best remedy against mold is to prevent it in the first place. This sounds too clever by half but it has truth in it. No mold cleaner available on the market will help you to control mold in your house if you do not tackle the cause for mold. Once mold has developed, the question is which anti mold product is the right one. Is it the home remedy against mold, recommended by mother really effective, or does it have to be the super aggressive mold cleaner / mold killer from the specialist shop? I will try and provide some answers around anti mold products in this article.
Let’s start with a well known home remedy against mold – vinegar. Unfortunately, this home remedy against mold is only useful to a certain extend to control mold. In using vinegar on ceramic surfaces or glass or other sealed surfaces, you can achieve good results. This is because vinegar has a high PH level which fungi don’t really like. Our home remedy against mold loses the battle on limy surfaces like plaster, etc., because limestone neutralises the PH levels of the vinegar and ruins its ability to control mold. Quite the opposite, vinegar can serve as a breeding ground for mold as it contains various nutrients. Be cautious using home remedies against mold which are based on vinegar.
Commonly available in DIY stores or supermarkets are various brands of aerosol cans containing a chlorine based solution. These anti mold products are effective against mold but they should only be used on small areas. I would like to point out that when handled inappropriately chlorine vapour is a health hazard, this is why anti mold cleaner should always only be used in well ventilated rooms and in small quantities. Please read the label of the mold killer first and follow the instructions closely.
An effective remedy against mold is strong alcohol or isopropanol. A concentration of 70%-80% alcohol per volume kills any surface mold effectively. It is more or less odourless and vaporises quickly. Again, when using alcohol ensure that rooms are well ventilated and under no circumstances smoke or work with naked flames. Should you see yourself faced with large-scale mold growth it is recommended to contact a specialist company for mold remediation. As a remedy against mold, alcohol is always preferable to any other mold cleaner / mold killer.
A chemical mold cleaner should only be applied with some reservations. These mold cleaners have a depot effect to prevent mold growth long term. The toxic substances in a chemical mold killer can accumulate in the flat or the house and depending on dosage and place of usage pose a threat to your health.
Whatever product against mold you chose, only use it in small doses and ensure correct handling. Always wear rubber gloves, protective goggles and if necessary respiratory masks to protect against accidents. And lastly, keep mold cleaner away from children!
And again, I would like to recommend that, should you have large-scale mold growth (greater 0.5m²), to contact a specialist company for mold remediation. This is because mold remediation works can release large amounts of mildew spores.
