Mold elimination on plasterboard, chipboards or OSB boards

Mold elimination for absorbent materials like plasterboard, chipboard, OSB boards or cardboard is only possible by a complete disposal of the contaminated materials. Superficial treatment is futile because it only tackles the visible mold. The mildew mycelia will have spread throughout the material and contaminated it completely. It seems hard but in this case disposal it the only way to control mildew. After stripping the area generously and before rebuilding, adjacent areas should be wiped down with strong alcohol in order to control mildew and all remaining spores.

Should you have mold growth on untreated wood, you can remediate this, depending on intensity and duration of the mold contamination by planing followed by disinfecting the affected areas with strong alcohol (70%-80% alcohol by volume). For mold elimination in cases like this it is important that you work thoroughly, as otherwise the mold will return. It is hard to estimate how deeply the mold penetrated the wood. In doubt, a complete disposal of the material is the only way to guarantee complete mold elimination.

Should you have mold growth on upholstery, carpets and heavy curtains and drapes, huge efforts are required to achieve complete mold elimination. In most cases it proves not financially viable and should the item in question not necessarily be a designer piece or hand-woven carpets, it is recommended to dispose of it.

You should not attempt and try mold elimination on expensive pieces of upholstery furniture yourself. It is very likely that you damage or stain the material. Leave the mold elimination to specialist companies to control mildew on the pieces of great value.
